Sleep Better Tonight with Help from this Essential Vitamin.

This is from Woman’s World 7/9/12.

Drift off to sleep faster with B12.

This nutrient is essential for brain function. It’s a proven remedy for depression, anxiety, and memory lapses. Now Japanese research suggest a daily 1,000 mug dose could also help you drift ff more easily. “B12 nourishes your brain’s pineal gland, helping it produce a surge of sleep-triggering melatonin at bedtime,” explains C.W. Randolph Jr., M.D., founder of the Natural Hormone Institute in Jacksonville, Florida.

I wanted to add in this entry because my trainer has recommended B12 for me to boost my energy. It’s so essential that I’m considering adding a weekly B12 shot to my normal regimen. If you don’t want to be that extreme, go for a good B vitamin supplement which covers B12 and other B vitamins.

The 10 Second Cure for Stress Eating.

This one is from the Summer 2012 issue of the Self Guide to Flat Abs Made easy.

Should I eat a cookie? The 10 second cure for stress eating.

Fending off a snack attack can be as simple as asking, Am I hungry? When a craving doesn’t come from hunger, food will never satisfy it, says Michelle May, MD author of East What You Love, Love What You EAst. “Treat your body like your car. Check your fuel gauge before you fill up.? Imagine 1 is starving and 10 is full, and aim to eat at 4, when you stomach feels fairly empty but it isn’t clanging with hunger pangs. To prevent bingeing, eat before you feel signals such as irritability, light-headedness or headaches.

Retrain your brain. If 10 seconds of contemplation reveals that you’re not truly hungry, there are ways to lower your cortisol level without calories. “Do anything that let’s you take a breath: Chat with a friend, watch a soap opera, or hang from the monkey bars,” says STephanie Smith, Psy. D., a psychologist in Erie, Colorado. Change your routine and when you’re feeling stressed, your brain will crave your brand of fun instead of treats.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Detox.

This detox program is from Gwyneth Paltrow’s website, Goop. Check out goop.com for the recipes in this detox. Her site is great.

According to Dr. Alejandro Junger* (our detox specialist) in addition to the above, there are a few more “basic principles of detoxification” that should be kept in mind while following our detox menus.

  • Do deep breathing or gentle yoga.
  • Take a couple of spoonfuls of extra virgin olive oil at night to help stimulate your liver to eliminate bile and keep its circulation flowing.
  • If your bowel movements get sluggish, you can accelerate things by drinking half a shot glass of castor oil followed by a glass of water or using a mild herbal laxative. Bowel elimination is paramount for correct detoxification.
  • The skin gets rid of many toxins so it is important to sweat, either by exercising or taking a sauna.
  • Finally, make sure you eat whole organic foods, which have the best chance of having all the nutrients needed for liver and general detoxification.

*This is an excerpt from Dr. Junger’s upcoming book Clean, which will be published in May. Be sure to pick up a copy!

Exercise Free Tips for Losing Weight.

This one is from the April 23, 2012 issue of OK magazine.

1. Drink Water: Water keeps you hydrated and feeling full longer.

2. Eat Veggies: Pack along crunchy, raw vegetables, like broccoli or snow peas, for a high-fiber, low-cal midday snack.

3. Share: Split an appetizer or dessert with your dinner companion. You’ll save calories (and money) but not feel deprived.

4. Use smaller Plates: When cutting portions, eat meals on a smaller plate. Psychologically, it feels more satisfying than eating a small portion on a half-empty plate.

5. Enjoy Fruit, not Fruit Juice: Fruit juice has a lot of calories and can be sweetened with sugar. A piece of fruit is often 100 calories or less and contains fiber.

6. Don’t Go Hungry: Eating at regular times helps prevent binging and keeps your blood sugar at a constant level.

7. Don’t Drink Calories: By cutting out sweetened colas and sugary coffee drinks, you could save 200 calories or more per drink!

8. Get Enough Sleep: People have a tendency to eat more when they’re sleep-deprived, so get a good eight hours in to feel your best and stick to your diet.

9. Take One Day Completely Off: That’s rightL You should allow yourself one cheat day to eat whatever you want. It’s suggested that eating more calories once a week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate doesn’t slow down from an extended low-calorie diet.

(Note. I left out one of the tips because it suggests using a supplement that I don’t know anything about and that I don’t endorse.)
